Attorney Sheridan Brown Recognized for Loon Protection Efforts

(Moultonborough, NH) – Attorney Sheridan Brown of Grantham was recently recognized by the Loon Preservation Committee (“LPC”) for his role in securing passage of Senate Bill 89 as LPC’s Legislative Coordinator. SB 89 protects loons from toxic lead (Pb) fishing sinkers and jigs weighing one ounce or less—the largest known cause of New Hampshire adult loon mortality.

Brown—an avid birdwatcher and former U.S. Senate aide—led direct advocacy, grassroots, and media relations efforts associated with the bill. He has also been a longtime volunteer for the NH Audubon Society, twice leading efforts to defeat legislation that would have allowed the use of owls for falconry in the Granite State.

Although Brown was singled out for recognition at LPC’s Annual Meeting—and previously by Gov. Maggie Hassan and Rep. Ben Lefebvre at the bill signing ceremony for SB 89—he was quick to give credit to others. “This success for NH’s wildlife was only possible because of SB 89’s incredible legislative champions like Sen. Jeanie Forrester, the Governor, and many dedicated volunteers. It was inspiring to work alongside the members of this great team, and they deserve the credit.”

Brown said he was humbled to share the stage at the Annual Meeting with Dr. Mark Pokras of Tufts University Veterinary Clinic, a leading authority on loons who has worked for decades to increase understanding and awareness of the lead threat to loons and other wildlife. While the two were both recognized with framed photos for their work in support of SB 89, Pokras also received LPC’s “Spirit of the Loon” Award for his many years of work on behalf of loon protection.
